Kelly and William Newton-Wordsworth are the longest running broadacre biodynamic or organic farmers in Western Australia. They commenced farming using the biodynamic farming techniques from Rudolf Steiner in 1988.
This means they have farmed almost 3,000 acres of land, without using any poisons, including artificial nitrogen-based fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical drenches for animals, since then. At that time some people told them that what they were setting out to do was “impossible” and that in ten years their land would be “barren”. The opposite is true. Since that time, they have farmed successfully without any artificial pollutants including GMOs, and the land is more naturally abundant and fertile every year. Highlights of the results of farming in this way, include being awarded a Western Australian ‘Sustainability award’ for agriculture in 2012, as well as the Williams Land care Award. Kelly and William were guests of Slow Food Victoria at an event where William spoke about biodynamic organic beef and lamb. They were also flown to Italy to participate in the “Terra Madre” Slow Food convention, featuring 1500 traditional food producers from around the world.
William and Kelly have been producing beef, lamb, olives, pistachios, fruits and vegetables, some for the market and the rest for themselves and others living on the land. They also have a horse stud, accommodation and a small centre to run events. Together with volunteers, they have spent many years planting tens of thousands of native trees for conservation since 1988, and they have developed orchards of olives for table and oil, pistachios, citrus and a wide varieties of fruit trees for self-sufficiency. Their farm has become a model of diversity, sustainability with limited inputs, and self-sufficiency.
Biodynamic farming methods are renown for producing foods of great flavour. This is reflected in results that William and Kelly have achieved. Their olive oil and orange marmalade were included in 30 products chosen from an Australia wide tour by exclusive gourmet grocer ‘Harvey Nicolls of London. Their biodynamic beef was named in the top ten gourmet products of Western Australia.
William has spoken in debates against the promoters of GM crops, which included representatives of Monsanto and other chemical companies. One debate was in front of an audience of 1,500 farmers. William also brought a motion which was passed unanimously whilst being a representative on the Shire Council of his local town, for the Shire of Williams became the first in Australia to have a moratorium against the growing of GM crops. The stands that he and Kelly have made in their lives for the future of the earth and humanity, fly in the face of modern conventional agriculture, which is increasingly run by huge conglomerate agro chemical and life science companies.
Kelly and William’s story together could be the subject of many books and movies, as it has been a deeply spiritual “unexpected” journey that has taken them both all over the world sometimes into very dangerous situations, to make the difference they have been led to make. Some of the highlights include Kelly performing at the first World Peace Concert” in the history of India in Himalayan Ladakh, singing her own composition for the King of Thailand’s 80th birthday at his palace, speaking on the Peoples’ Alliance for Democracy stage in Thailand, performing at ‘Live Earth’ in Los Angeles, a thirty-concert tour in Germany, and speaking and performing at many rallies in Australia and worldwide standing for the future of people and the earth. Kelly’s song, ‘A whale for the killing’ was successfully used by ‘Greenpeace’ worldwide in the campaign to create a sanctuary for whales in the Antarctic. Her song and videoclip “What is happening to our forests” was an integral part of the successful campaign to stop the logging of the last of the Western Australian old growth forests and resulted in saving over one million hectares of this precious environmental legacy.
During and since the Pandemic they have both been involved as ‘Freedom fighters’ with the production of Kelly’s songs and videos, Hold the line, The Forest of the fallen, Wake up Australia, Exit the WHO, No Digital Prison and Enough is enough, and through speaking and performing at rallies and events. They are also both authors. Kelly’s book ‘This is YOUR life’, is rated in one Amazon review, as the “greatest personal growth book” the person had ever read. It has also been described by readers as a “paradigm shifter” and a “paradigm shatterer”. William’s first book ‘Warnings from the living God’, will be launched online by the end of May.
The greatest joy in their lives comes from their spiritual life. They would call themselves “spiritual Christians”. Their life together is a constant flow of unexpected miraculous journeys. They also have great joy with their three children, son-in-law, daughter in law and two grandsons along with their extended family and friends. They work daily to make the difference that they are led to make for God to do His will on earth as “it is in heaven”.
The ‘Living Free festival’ is a wonderful opportunity to run a workshop about looking after the earth, enhancing the soil to bring the healthiest and greatest tasting veggies, herbs, flowers, and fruit with what they believe is the most “life filled” and sustainable method of growing plants in the world.
‘Biodynamics’ has been described as a “life enhancing” method of agriculture, that activates the soil in a unique way to bring about the highest level of antioxidants, nutrients and brilliant flavours from the foods grown.
Come along to their workshop and leave as transformed as the biodynamic method transforms cow manure into a substance that has 500,000,000 living micro-organisms per gram. One handful of this material is enough to activate one acre of land. This is the reason that the final substance mixed with water and sprayed out over the land, is known as ‘500’.
Kelly and William are so looking forward to meeting you there!
